We discuss doing cover songs pretty frequently, but we rarely get around to working on them. And when we do work on them, they almost never see the light of day. For example, so far, we've covered Robert Plant's "Big Log," Tricky's "For Real," The Zombies' "This Will Be Our Year," and two songs by Mark Lanegan: "Head" and "Hit the City." And we've discussed covering a bunch more.
"If You Were Here," however, is the only cover song that we've ever played live. We were initially drawn to it after realizing that the lyrics are brutal. And the song captures sort of a wonderful moment in pop history; the world thought it was a love song because Samantha Baker and Jake Ryan had a little kissy-poo over a birthday cake, and the world only focused on the first four words. But the lyrics turn unsettling right after those four words.
