about

This is the original version of the song in its earliest stage, and the sound quality is rough. The lyrics were nowhere near finalized yet, and some of this exists as phonetics and vague ideas to get the melody and harmony down. It’s been too long to accurately remember, but it sounds like the first line may have been, “Last fall gaze,” which could be a reference to the time Melissa and Ryan drove to New York City in her old car—a memorable trip because she played The Breeders’ Title TK (super loud), and Ryan was transformed forever. During the drive, they saw what was probably a stunning sunset in the distance, and she said, “That would probably be really beautiful for someone who’s into that kind of shit.” Ryan agreed. Clearly, they bonded over the fact that sunsets are dumb, even when they’re “pretty.”

Eventually, the solidified lyrics shifted gears entirely and focused on a relationship that had recently ended. This couple seemed perfect together, and their breakup was a mystery. Nothing good ever comes from opening a conversation with, "We need to talk." It’s a grim tune.

Soccer Team Washington, D.C.

Soccer Team is an unpopular band from Washington, DC. They are largely ignored by their target audience and pretty much ignored by their close friends and peers. They have played abysmal and poorly attended shows in states such as South Carolina and Kentucky, whereby the sole attendance was comprised of the other bands on the bill. Despite this, they continue to write songs and play shows. ... more
